I'm leaving in a week

On Thursday, October 25 I am off to Vienna to see Maggie and Daniel and to spend the High Holy Days in the City of Dreams. I had planned to learn German, but I have only learned "Vo ist die toilette?".

I've been reading about the city of Vienna, especially the time in the 1800's when the liberals came into power and built important parts of the city. I'm looking forward to seeing the art and architecture from that time. I've also been reading about the end of the 1800's when the liberals ideals were coming into question. That time reminds me so much of our own time and I hope to understand it better.

I will be meeting Daniel's parents and grandparents who live in Carinthia in southern Austria. It sounds beautiful there. Here is a link to the website for Daniel's grandparents' farm: http://www.kanatschnig.at/

I've been reading as much as I can about the Jewish community in Vienna before and during the 1930's. There is a significant Jewish community in Vienna today. Maggie and I (and maybe Daniel) will go to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services in Vienna's only liberal synagogue, Or Chadash. We will have Rosh Hashanah dinner and break the fast at Maggie and Daniel's apartment in the (I think?) 19th district.

Maggie and Daniel's apartment is very near the famous Vienna Woods, so I hope to go on some hikes. And of course, I really hope to see opera!!!!! And I can't wait to experience the famous coffeehouses of Vienna.

It sounds like you should have a wonderful trip. What will poor Alan being doing all this time you are exploring continental Europe? I know Patches will appreciate that he will be continuing to provide care for her. Good luck finding a good toilet and reasonable toilet paper. I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you!

It will be quite an adventure. You've said you're a little scatter-brained in preparation for the trip, but uh... leaving OCTOBER 25th? I hope you've got your plane ticket on the right schedule here... hee hee. Can always count on me to be your obnoxious editor. Well, Ry-J says it counts as October because there's Halloween decorations in the stores. Is that how it works now? Anyway, if you get into any trouble over there, you know what to do.... COFFEEHOUSE!

Hoorah!!! I cannot wait for you to be here. The blog is a very good idea - I think it's so important to write about travels if you want to prevent your memories abroad from deteriorating into one short fog punctuated by restaurants and subway stations. I will be expecting/enforcing daily entries while you are here and of course, I will have to edit them first, to make sure that Daniel and I appear in the best possible light. Hopefully, as Annie suggested, we'll be able to keep you so steadily hopped up on coffee that it shouldn't be a problem.

So I broke down as you probably knew I would. I am supremely jealous of you and expect to live vicariously through you with the blogs. Especially since I had to register and everything.
Also, I think you are really cute. Do you need some Viagra?
You thought some silly registration process could keep me away from your comment section?! Haha!!
Well, enjoy your very exciting travels and good luck on finding the right skirt and pants.

Well, guess I better weigh in here
after all these erudite folks.......
I was looking over at my calendar as
well(like m, like d) and wondering
first, why the new year was in October and second, how you would
make it back by Nov. 4th!
You will be your incomparable
intrepid self...just remember the
universal language phrase: "Samo!"
